Starting CrossFit for me was a life-changing decision. In 2013 I stepped into a CrossFit gym for the first time by way of an invite from a friend. Looking back, as someone who has done their fair share of workouts there are definitely a few things I wish I had known before starting. Whether you are a newbie or have been out of CrossFit for a few years and are looking to get back into it, here are some of the most important lessons I have learned over the last 12 years.
1. It’s About What Your Body Can Do
When I first started, I had a specific image in my head. I knew Rich Froning did CrossFit and I was convinced that if I worked out for one hour a day that I would eventually look like him. Boy was I wrong. I didn’t realize Rich worked out as a full-time job essentially.
CrossFit is about performance, not appearance. Sure, physical changes are going to take place. But it is more important to focus on what your body can do rather than how you look. Embrace the process of getting stronger, faster and becoming more capable.
2. Rest is Just as Important as Working Out
As I near the ripe age of 35 I am learning that rest is more important than ever. I can without a doubt say that I am fitter at 35 than I was at 25. However, I don’t workout as much as I did when I was 25. Rest and recovery are essential to your progress. Without it, you run the risk of burnout, injury and fatigue.
Prioritize rest days, get enough sleep and listen to your body when it tells you to take a break.
3. Don’t Compare Yourself to Others
This was a big one for me. It is easy to look around the gym and feel discouraged when you see someone lifting heavier weights or finishing a workout faster than you. But what I have learned is that everyone’s fitness journey is different. People are at different points in their lives and training, and just because someone is stronger or finishing a workout before you, doesn’t mean you behind. Your progress is your own.
4. You Can Still Get Fit by Scaling Workouts
In the beginning, I thought that if I scaled a workout that it meant I wasn’t strong or fit enough. I quickly learned that scaling is actually smart training. It allows for proper form, building strength gradually and avoiding injury. Everyone has to start somewhere!
5. The Community is What Makes CrossFit Special
The community aspect of CrossFit is something that is often talked about, but until you truly experience it for yourself it is hard to understand. The encouragement, the comaraderie, and the sense of belonging are all part of what makes CrossFit so special. I worked out alone for 2 years in my parent’s garage. It would be so hard most days to motivate myself to go workout. If I had been a part of a gym it would have been so much easier because there would be a community of like minded individuals waiting to encourage me.
When I started CrossFit, I literally had no idea what I was getting myself into. But now, I can’t imagine my life without it. Yes improving my fitness has been great. But what has been greater is learning about myself and what I am capable of, pushing through challenges, and becoming a part of an amazing community. If you are just getting started or on the fence about starting, remember: you are not alone. The best thing you can do is get started and enjoy the ride.
