Grocery Shopping on a Budget

Grocery shopping can be stressful these days. Add in the fact you are attempting to eat healthy while on a budget and that alone can make it even more stressful. But with a few smart strategies, you can buy foods that move you towards your goals without overspending. At CrossFit Alabaster, our nutrition coaching provides personalized advice on how to make smart choices at the store. Here are some timps to help you shop smarter.

1. Make a Shopping List and Stick to It
Before heading to the grocery store, make a list of the items you need based on what you are cooking for the next week. This helps you to stick to a plan in terms of what you are buying and cut out any impulsive purchases. Stick to your list and resist the urge to buy items that are not on it.

2. Shop the Perimeter of the Store

The perimeter of the store is typically where you’ll find fresh produce, meats, dairy, and other whole foods. These are generally healthier options compared to the processed foods found in the middle aisles. Focus your shopping around the store’s perimeter to find fresh and nutritious items.

3. Buy in Bulk

Buying in bulk can save you money on items you use frequently, such as grains, beans, nuts, and seeds. Look for bulk bins or larger packages of these staples, which are often cheaper per unit than smaller packages. Be sure to store bulk items properly to prevent spoilage.

4. Compare Prices and Shop Sales

Take the time to compare prices between different brands and stores. Look for sales and discounts on healthy items and stock up when they’re available. Many stores also offer loyalty programs or digital coupons that can help you save even more.

5. Choose Store Brands

Store-brand products are often just as good as name-brand items but at a lower price. When it comes to basics like canned vegetables, pasta, or grains, consider choosing the store-brand version to save money.

6. Avoid Pre-Packaged and Processed Foods

Pre-packaged and processed foods, like pre-cut fruits and vegetables or frozen dinners, are often more expensive and less healthy than their whole counterparts. Buy whole fruits and vegetables and cut them yourself to save money and eat fresher.
