How to Set Realistic Goals on Your Fitness Journey

As we near the start of another year many of us will set out with goals for the new year. In terms of our health and fitness realted goals it is much more than just deciding you want to achieve said goal. What matters more is that you are laying a foundation for your long-term success. Start by understanding your starting point and what you are capable of right now. I am all for dreaming big, but the path to the best version of yourself is a marthon, not a sprint.

Here are some tips when it comes to setting goals:

Be Specific
Instead of planning to “get in shape”, be specific with your goals. Maybe you are wanting to be able to run a 5K or be able to lift a cerain amount of weight. Maybe you are wanting improved health markers at your yearly check up with your doctor. Being specific allows you to better plan and measure your progress along the way.

Make it Measurable
When possible, make your goals quantifiable. This will make it where you are easily able to identify whether you are on track or need to adjust your approach. To make your goal measurable, consider the frequency, intensity and the overall duration.

Ensure it’s Achievable
The best type of goals are ones that will stretch you but are also still within reason for you to be able to achieve. Be honest with where you are currently with your fitness level and resources. Progress matters. No matter how big or small. Every step forward is progress towards the best version of yourself.

Relevance is Key

Your goals should tie back to your “why” in my opinion. They should be relevant to your life and what matters to you. Why is achieving this goal important to you? Maybe you want to have more energy to play with your kids or grandkids, or maybe you just want to have more confidence in how you look. Make your goals based off what truly matters most in your life.

Timelines for Success
Finally, give your goal a timeline. When will you achieve this? Having an end date keeps you focused and committed, and it helps you to measure your progress along the way.

Your Next Steps
Setting realistic fitness goals is an essential first step on your journey to improving your health and fitness. It won’t always be easy, but remember that every small step you take towards your goals is a victory.
