What Does Healthy Aging Actually Look Like?

“Do something today your future self will thank you for.”

In the middle of a workout, you are not going to see the immediate results from what you are currently going through. Same with nutrition. Choosing to eat an ideal meal over a less-than-ideal meal doesn’t yield immediate results.

But developing that habit of choosing to take care of yourself is setting yourself up for future success. In the moment, you don’t see the benefits. But look back on them 10, 20, 30, and even 40 years from now, and you will be much happier that you chose to take care of yourself instead of the other way around.

As we age, your goal shouldn’t just be to look younger. Aging is inevitable. We are all going to get older. But losing strength, mobility, energy, and independence doesn’t have to happen as quickly as people assume.

In my opinion, as we age, what should matter most is what our bodies can do. Not necessarily how they look. I’m not saying we should be ashamed of getting older or the wrinkles that come with it. Those are part of aging. But being in your 60s, 70s, or even 80s and still being strong enough and capable enough to play with your grandkids should be something we strive for.

I was working with a personal training client a few weeks back, and we needed an option to do for cardio. I asked him how he would feel about running. He was confident enough in his abilities to be willing to try, and before I knew it, he was taking off on 100-meter runs and not thinking twice about it.

In the moment, I thought to myself, “That’s my goal.” I want to be able to say “yes” to as much as I can as I age and not have to say no to things because physically I can’t do something.

The workouts you do now are, in a way, setting your future self up for success.

I think of it like a 401K. In the moment, I don’t see the rewards from making that monthly contribution to it. To be quite honest, I would rather actually use it NOW. But one day, when I retire, I am going to look back and think to myself how thankful I was that I was making those contributions each month.

The same can be said for exercising and taking care of ourselves. Each workout can be viewed as a deposit. A tiny contribution to bettering ourselves.

We aren’t training just to look good today. We’re training so that 20, 30, or 40 years from now, we can still live the life we want to live.
